Our Work

Empowering Sikhs in Clinical Research -

Diversity in Clinical Research

Sikhs in Clinical Research (SICR) is established with the mission to raise awareness of clinical research within the Sikh community, an underrepresented group, both as a treatment and care option and as a career or business opportunity. Since its inception, SICR has made significant strides in educating the community about the vital role clinical research plays in healthcare. What began as a small initiative has now grown and is working towards this shared mission.

SICR’s efforts are multifaceted, including patient advocacy, education, and outreach:

  • Guest Speakers and Educational Events: To date, SICR has hosted over 30 guest speakers, including experts, professionals, and advocates, who share their knowledge and insights on clinical research topics.
  • On-the-Ground Outreach: SICR has organized more than 30 educational camps across states like Indiana, Boston, Michigan, California, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, and Wisconsin. These camps aim to directly engage with community members, offering information, resources, and guidance about clinical research as a care and treatment option.

Raising Awareness of Clinical Research as a Treatment and Care Option

At the heart of SICR’s work is its mission to raise awareness of clinical research as a viable treatment and care option. Clinical research plays a critical role in developing new therapies, improving healthcare outcomes, and offering patients more treatment options.

SICR aims to bridge the gap between clinical research and the Sikh community, which has historically been underrepresented in clinical trials. By promoting diversity-competent care, SICR ensures that research and treatments are inclusive, helping Sikhs make informed decisions about participating in clinical trials.

Empowering Communities and Women’s Voices

SICR recently launched a 100-book giveaway in Punjab, featuring the Clinical Research and Medical Writing Career Guide. Additionally, SICR is committed to women's empowerment, drawing inspiration from Gurbani (Guru’s words): "ਸੋ ਕਿਉ ਮੰਦਾ ਆਖੀਐ ਜਿਤੁ ਜੰਮਹਿ ਰਾਜਾਨ ॥" (Why call her inferior, from whom kings are born).

Promoting the Use of Punjabi and Overcoming Health Disparities

SICR encourages the promotion of Punjabi, the primary language of the Sikh community, especially among children. This focus aims to reduce future language barriers between healthcare providers and patients, fostering a stronger connection in healthcare settings.

100-Book Giveaway in Punjab

SICR launched a book giveaway drive in Punjab to inspire the youth with insights into clinical research careers and medical writing. We still have a few copies left. If you are in Punjab and would like a free copy delivered to your home, please email us at info@sikhsinclinicalresearch.com

Spiritual Connection and Clinical Research

Our spiritual journey is a pillar of our mission. Staying connected to Guru Granth Sahib Ji (Sikh holy scripture) is essential. "ਮੇਰਾ ਬੈਦੁ ਗੁਰੂ ਗੋਵਿੰਦਾ ॥" (My physician is my Guru) reminds us that medicine takes effect when accepted with prayer.

Building a Diverse and Inclusive Future

SICR’s ultimate goal is to improve representation in clinical research, secure internships and job opportunities for community members, and increase workforce diversity. We also strive for the industry to provide greater access to clinical research treatments for our community and ensure culturally competent care.
